Do you know about 歌舞伎?
Good evening, it is past seven in the evening in Japan.
How are you all doing?
The "September Grand Sumo Tournament" is going on right now, and there are some very exciting matches going on every day!
Today, I'd like to talk a little bit about Kabuki, which I love.
There are many Japanese people who have never seen Kabuki, so there is no problem if you don't know anything about it.
But if you know about it, you might enjoy it more.
Nowadays, Kabuki is something that only men can do.
However, a woman named "Izumo no Akuni" first became a tool of Kabuki.
After that, there were multiple dances performed by prostitutes, but due to the disturbance of public morals, women were banned, followed by young boys, but that too was disturbed, and then the current itinerary of adult men.
Kabuki can be divided into three main genres? I think so.
There are "jidaimono," which are based on historical facts, and
There are "jidaimono," which are based on historical facts, "sewa-mono," which depict the lives of ordinary people, and "kabuki.
And "Japanese traditional " which shows the dance.
I think these three elements are the most important.
In Jidaimono,(時代物) the names and periods are arranged a little bit because there were many times when the play could not be performed due to suppression from the shogunate and other authorities if the historical facts were performed as they were.
The best example of this is "Kanadehon- Chushingura".(仮名手本忠臣蔵)
It is very easy to understand the story because it depicts a lot of righteousness and humanity that can be understood even today.
As for the dance, it is a luxurious time to enjoy the beautiful and well-trained Japanese dance.
Also, the atmosphere of the play is different between Edo (Tokyo) and Kamigata (Osaka), where the Edo plays are crisp and cool, while the Kamigata plays are a little sexier and softer.
It is a reflection of the local atmosphere.
Kimonos, wigs, hairpins, makeup, etc.
also change accordingly.
A tradition with 400 years of history is quite deep...!
That's all for today 👋
